Flower stone sculpture from Ua Pou

This stone sculpture from Ua Pou depicts an iconic scene in Marquesan Polynesian art.
It features two superimposed figures :

  • At the top, a warrior stands wearing a traditional topknot and holding an elongated object resembling a weapon or symbol of power. His proud and energetic stance conveys the strength and vigilance of the elders.

  • At the base, a seated figure with a stylized, powerful face reminiscent of ancestral or divine representations. The marked features and meditative posture evoke protection and spirituality.

The contrast between the vigor of the standing figure and the serenity of the seated figure creates a visual and symbolic balance. The flowered stone, with its natural veining, reinforces the nobility and depth of the whole, giving the work a timeless aura.

This piece illustrates both the connection between humans and their ancestors, and the importance of cultural transmission through Marquesan sculpture.
