Penu with its coral base

This piece depicts a penu from the Austral Islands of Tubuai made of coral, a traditional Polynesian tool used as a pestle to crush or prepare food. Entirely crafted from coral, both for the body of the penu and its base, the work highlights the richness and uniqueness of marine materials.

The natural texture of coral, both porous and luminous, gives the object an organic and authentic presence. It recalls the close connection between the ancient Polynesians and their environment, where every resource from the sea or the land had a practical and symbolic use.

Placed on its pedestal, the sculpture stands out both as a revisited ethnographic object and as a contemporary work of art, inviting reflection on the transmission of know-how and the preservation of natural materials.
